Dr. Esme Spicer is a well-experienced Geologist and owner of Rock Hounds (Pty) Ltd – Geological Consulting. After extensive travel, she is now living in George, Western Cape. Focusing on groundwater surveys, Gemstone and Jewelry evaluations, and solving moisture problems for the building industry.Rock Hounds (Pty) Ltd -Geological Consulting specializes in surveys for borehole drilling, exploring the possibility of tapping into a sustainable source of water. This of course is a much-needed service in certain areas where there is water scarcity.

What are XRF and XRD Consulting?

XRF (X-Ray Fluorescence) and XRD (X-Ray Diffraction) are two separate analytical techniques that use an X-ray source and detector. Although they are different they also compliment each other. Both measure the sample’s response to the X-rays to supply information.

XRD determines the presence and amounts of minerals species and identifies phases in the sample, while XRF gives details on the chemical composition of a sample.

  • Experienced Analytical Services Manager in the environment, mining, and metals industry (techniques: Scanning, Electron Microscopy (SEM), X-Ray Fluorescence, X-Ray Diffraction, Energy Dispersive EDXRF, and Electron Microprobe Analysis)
  • Qualified FLIR Cat1 Thermal Imager
  • Holds a European Gemmological membership at the Geological Society of South Africa,
  • She is also part of the South African Jewelry Council and the Water Institute of South Africa.


Focussing on identifying minerals with basic field methods, she has developed a special short course for old and young. This contributes to Rock Hound Courses (PTY) Ltd. Significantly the courses are interactive, and a bit destructive, but definitely teach students the basics of mineral identification.
