Carpe Musicam! is a George community-based Orchestra. Offering high-standard Orchestral and Choral music throughout the Garden Route Region on a regular basis since 2015.
Initiated from a dream of 2 musical partners Elsabe Barkhuizen and Norman Carless, to create a safe, fun, and educational space for the young (and the not-so-young musicians) to learn the art of orchestral playing. Between themselves, they play more than 8 musical instruments and have more than 80 years of experience in professional musical performances.
Together with a core of experienced musicians, they tutor amateur instrumentalists to become more skillful players. Every piece of music is specifically arranged and orchestrated with an eye to the instrumentation and to each player’s skills. Furthermore, believing that practical musicianship is worth much more than the ability to win prizes at music competitions, or excel at examinations. Thus, the ability to sit down in front of previously unseen music in an unfamiliar group of musicians, and to have the calm confidence to give a good account of oneself is the real test of any musician.
Carpe Musicam! is an NPO and all players perform voluntarily. Ticket sales just about cover general overheads. Therefore sponsorships are always welcome – large or small – from generous members of the business community, helping the orchestra to grow in all sorts of ways.
